Emergentist-Culturalist Paradox: A Philosophical Critique of the Anti-Universalism in Language Studies

Resumo

Este artigo revisa as teorias emergentistas-culturalistas da linguagem natural no que diz respeito à dificuldade dessas abordagens em explicar por que o input cultural e social, apesar de sua alegada intensidade e riqueza, é insuficiente para gerar competência linguística plena fora do período crítico. A partir da análise de casos clínicos e experimentais, argumenta-se que essas teorias pressupõem, sem admitir, uma estrutura computacional funcionalmente especializada, o que compromete sua coerência epistemológica. Apresenta se, portanto, uma crítica à postura antiuniversalista vigente no âmbito dos estudos da linguagem, cuja raiz num empirismo radical particularista tem colocado em risco o caráter científico da Linguística.

Este texto é fruto das reflexões desenvolvidas pelo autor ao longo de sua preparação do curso de Filosofia da Linguagem II da Faculdade de São Bento do Rio de Janeiro. No entanto, muito do seu conteúdo começou a ser estruturado ao longo do tempo que passou sob a supervisão da professora Letícia M. S. Corrêa no Laboratório de Psicolinguística e Aquisição da Linguagem (LAPAL/PUC-Rio). Os modelos de aquisição da linguagem (Corrêa, 2009) e de computação linguística em tempo real (Corrêa; Augusto, 2007), com cujo desenvolvimento pôde contribuir minimamente, sempre se exigiram máximo rigor na compatibilização teórica de seus pressupostos a uma teoria de língua. Essa perspectiva conciliatória é a marca da crítica ensejada neste artigo. A produção deste texto também está em dívida com aluno do autor, Tomás Meissner Miranda, cujas perguntas o inspiraram a retomar a presente discussão.

Doutor em Estudos da Linguagem pela PUC-Rio, com ênfase em Psicolinguística, Aquisição da Linguagem e Sintaxe Gerativa. Atualmente é professor de Filosofia da Faculdade de São Bento do Rio de Janeiro.
